  88. Thank you for your interest in Coeli - Electric Planisphere.

  90. Coeli utilizes Super VGA graphics via the VESA standard interface to
  91. generate highly realistic views of the heavens anywhere in the world.
  92.  
  93. However, due to the vagaries of 'standards' in the swiftly changing
  94. world of advanced graphics ( which the IBM PC was never originally
  95. designed to handle ), your system as it is currently set up may not allow
  96. Coeli to function optimally.
  97.  
  98. You should be prepared for possible initial disappointment.

  100. But have no fear: with some perseverence you will be able to configure
  101. your system's video so that Coeli's skies display faultlessly.
  102.  
  103. You will need a VESA DRIVER in order to do this.
  104.  
  105. The best universal VESA driver is undoubtedly UniVBE from SciTech
  106. Software.

  108. You may already have a copy of UniVBE - if you're a gamer, you'll
  109. probably have received one bundled with an Electronic Arts title.

  160. with your setup, especially if you own a recent Pentium system.

  163. If odd events occur on your screen within the first few minutes of
  164. starting Coeli, don't panic:

  166. simply wait until things appear to settle, and then press [ESC]. If this
  167. achieves nothing and the screen data is completely unintelligible, you
  168. may have to reset your computer by either switching off and on again, or
  169. by pressing [CTRL]+[ALT]+[DEL].

  234.                     INSTALLING COELI - ELECTRIC PLANISPHERE
  235.                     ---------------------------------------

  237.          Your Coeli package is contained in a self-extracting file.
  238.  
  239.          This file is called COELI377.EXE
  240.  
  241.          Coeli cannot be run straight from HD floppy or CD ROM. To
  242.          install Coeli, just follow these simple steps:
  243.  
  244.          1) first create a new directory on your hard drive from Dos or
  245.          Windows. We suggest you call the directory COELI-3, but of
  246.          course anything will suffice. To accomplish this from the Dos
  247.          command line you would type the following:
  248.  
  249.                 MD COELI-3
  250.  
  251.          In Windows, you would double-click the File Manager icon and
  252.          then select Create Directory from the File menu.
  253.  
  254.          2) Copy all the files from your distribution media into the
  255.          new directory.
  256.  
  257.          3) Switch to the new directory and unpack the main archive
  258.          according to your supplier's instructions (it will probably
  259.          have a .ZIP or .LZH extension).
  260.  
  261.          From the Dos prompt, you might proceed as follows (assuming
  262.          your distribution medium is a floppy disk currently in drive
  263.          A, the supplier's archive is called COELI.ZIP, and your hard
  264.          disk is labelled drive C):

  274.          4) As mentioned, your Coeli package is contained in a
  275.          self-extracting file called COELI377.EXE. Simply run this like
  276.          a normal program from your new directory. All the Coeli files
  277.          will be reconstituted, and you will then be able to delete
  278.          COELI376.EXE from your hard disk, as it will have served its
  279.          purpose.
  280.  
  281.          NOTE: the foregoing steps will not be necessary if you
  282.          obtained your package on a diskette with COELI377.EXE in the
  283.          root directory unarchived. If such is the case, you may also
  284.          have received a program called INSTALL.BAT which should
  285.          completely automate the installation process explained here.
  286.  
  287.          5) If you have not already done so, install your VESA driver
  288.          by typing its name. If it loads without error, you'll be home
  289.          and dry and all you will need to do is start COELI from the
  290.          Dos prompt or from inside your favourite shell. Coeli runs
  291.          under Windows 3.1 too, but more slowly.
  292.  
  293.          Please note that you should always install a VESA driver prior
  294.          to using Coeli. A universal VESA driver may have been provided
  295.          on the same disk volume on which you acquired Coeli. Otherwise
  296.          please see the end of the manual for suggestions on how to
  297.          obtain one. Coeli 3 will not function without a VESA driver!
  298.

  300.          WINDOWS 95 USERS:
  301.  
  302.          There hasn't been much time to check Coeli's functionality
  303.          exhaustively within Microsoft's new operating system. However,
  304.          with a 2 Mb Diamond Stealth graphics card (S3 chipset) and
  305.          UniVBE version 5.3 installed, there don't seem to be any
  306.          problems.
  307.  
  308.          Simply drag COELI.EXE from the Explorer onto the desktop, and
  309.          a shortcut should create itself there with Coeli's own icon.
  310.          If the correct icon doesn't appear, right-click on the new
  311.          desktop icon, select Properties, Change Icon, then Browse.
  312.          While you're about it, go to the Memory tab and ensure 'Auto'
  313.          is visible in all the selection boxes. Check out the Screen
  314.          tab at the same time: Coeli should run as a full screen
  315.          application. Under Program - Advanced, the following boxes
  316.          should have ticks in them:
  317.  
  318.          'Prevent MS DOS-based programs from detecting Windows' and
  319.          'Suggest MS-DOS mode as necessary'
  320.  
  321.          If problems occur the first time round under Win 95, take note
  322.          of the resulting error messages, and then start fiddling
  323.          around with the Properties settings until you begin to get
  324.          positive results. The most likely cause of faults will be
  325.          failure to install a working VESA driver...
  326.  
  327.          We recommend that you glance at the manual before proceeding
  328.          further, either the Windows Write version (COELI.WRI), but
  329.          preferably the Ascii version (COELI.TXT).
  330.  
  331.          For example, to access COELI.TXT from Windows, just
  332.          double-click on it under File Manager and it will be displayed
  333.          in Notepad.

  335.          To read the same file under Dos, enter the following at the
  336.          Dos prompt:

  341.          The complete Coeli package contains a number of text files,
  342.          all designed to help you get started with the minimum of fuss.
  343.          Have a browse through any item with the .TXT or .DOC extension
  344.          if you've the time. There is even HELP-ME!.DOC for VESA
  345.          problems.

  348.          Please make a backup copy of your distribution disk so that,
  349.          if anything goes wrong, you can simply repeat the above
  350.          process and try again.

  389.          The program as it stands is not 'crippled'. The shareware
  390.          release of Coeli is similar in most respects to the current
  391.          registered version.

  393.          What sets registered copies apart is the Sky Quiz, total
  394.          personalization, complete absence of reminder screens, and
  395.          the capacity to load the entire database of over 9000 stars
  396.          without memory problems.

  398.          In return for your registration* and any suggestions or

  401.          with the initial observer slot pre-programmed with your name,
